The Eliot school was founded in Jamaica Plain in 1676 as a grammar school for Africans, Native Americans and colonial children. That the school accepted both African and Indian children without prejudice was a great exception for the time. The school survives near its original location to this day as The Eliot School of Fine and Applied Arts offering classes and workshops in woodworking, sewing, painting, drawing, photography, and other crafts to both children and adults. Learn more about the fascinating history of the school by listening to this by David Friedman and Charlie Fox that took place Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Eliot School, 24 Eliot St., Jamaica Plain.
